IITA Ibadan Vacancies: PO - Social Science

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), with headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria, invites applications for an Associate Professional Officer (APO): Social Science. IITA is a non-profit organization with over 130 internationally recruited scientists. The Institute has programs in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa. IITA scientists from about 35 countries work in partnership with national agricultural agencies to increase food production in tropical Africa, and ultimately to raise the productivity and income of small-scale farmers in an ecologically sustainable way.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Senior Scientist –Sustainable Tree Crops Program (STCP), the candidate’s primary responsibilities are:

Develop a conceptual framework for analyzing and evaluating the institutionalizing of farmer training approaches involving tree crops
Develop indicators for monitoring the process of institutionalizing farmer training approaches
Develop guidelines and procedures for evaluating suitable institutions for scaling up farmer training approaches
Monitor the institutionalization of participatory training approaches with tree crops using a case study approach
Conduct research on the institutionalization of farmer training approaches involving tree crops using a case study approach
Share methods developed with local partners
Analyze research data and prepare manuscripts for publication
Duty Station: IITA STCP Regional Office, Accra, Ghana
The candidate will be based in Accra, Ghana. Accra is the capital city of Ghana and it is the largest city with a population of approximately 4,000,000 people. Accra has an international airport with direct flights to major cities in West Africa, Europe and North America. The city has all the necessary facilities for living. This include different grades of residential houses to rent, medical facilities, international schools for children, recreational facilities, modern shopping facilities (supermarkets), broad band internet and is accessible to a number of tourist attractions

Professional Qualifications:
Masters degree or PhD in at least one of the following fields: Rural Sociology, Anthropology, Development Studies and Organizational Development.

Competencies Required:
· Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a cross-cultural environment
· Familiarity with rural institutions and rural livelihoods in both Francophone and Anglophone West Africa is desirable.
· Fluency (oral and written) in both English and French
· Willingness and ability to travel regionally and often under difficult conditions

General Information: The initial appointment is for one year, with a possible extension to three years. IITA offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
